In “Think of England” kombiniert Martin Parr Arbeiten von 1999 mit Arbeiten aus erst kürzlich realisierten Projekten über die West Bay, englische Esskultur und Blumen.
Die Fotos sind, wie schon bei “Common Sense”, der letzten Martin Parr-Ausstellung bei arsFutura, mit einer Ring Flash-Kamera aufgenommen und erzeugen dadurch ihren Parr-eigenen liebevollen und gleichzeitig brutal direkten Blick. “Think of England” ist eine Ausstellung bei der die englische Sensibilität, ebenso wie unser Selbstverständnis der westeuropäischen Kultur schmunzelnd auf die Probe gestellt wird.

Think of England is a comic, opinionated, affectionately satirical, colour-saturated essay about the character of England from Magnum photographer Martin Parr (1952). Arguably Britain’s most important contemporary photographer, Parr is prolific and popular, he’s a comic satirist who’s been compared to Johnathan Swift, he’s a mischief maker in the world of photography, journalism, art and fashion.
Quintessentially English himself, Parr’s tour of obvious England takes in seaside resorts, herbaceous borders, the bring and buy stall, cucumber sandwiches and cups of tea, Ascot and the charitiy shop, blotchy skin, baked beans, tattoos and bad footwear…
In this exhibition he brings together work shot in 1999 along with work shot recently for projects on West Bay, British food and flowers.
Simultaneously affectionate and brutally direct, all the photographs are shot with a ring flash camera (normally used for medical photographs), which has been his medium of choice for the last four years. Think of England is a book which will amuse and abuse the English sensibility as well as our understanding of ourselves as human beings of western culture.
